Instructions for Essay #1

ROUGH DRAFT DUE DATE: 10/30/12 11/6/12 (at the end of class)

You will write a five paragraph  essay in which you respond to one of the following prompt.

The poet and memoirist Mary Karr wrote that Uwem Akpan “has invented a new language—both for horror and for the relentless persistence of light in war-torn countries.” Where is the beauty or goodness in these tragic tales (e.g. "My Parents' Bedroom" and "Fattening for Gabon")? Offer three examples.

Your essay must contain:
  1. A thesis statement that can be shown, explained, or proven with evidence from the text.
  2. A body paragraph that proves each of the claims made in your thesis.
  3. A conclusion that recaps your thesis and leaves the reader with a "so what?" statement.
  4. At least three quotations or paraphrases from the book properly cited in MLA format.
  5. A Works Cited page.
Formatting & Submitting:
  • Please type your essay in MS Word (or other word processing software).
  • Please use Times New Roman, Size 12 font.
  • At the top of your first page, include:
    Your Name
    My Name
    ENG095-90
    Essay #1
  • Please DOUBLE SPACE.
  • Please number all pages.
Please Consider
  • Purpose - Your purpose is to illustrate YOUR interpretation of the text by explaining where and how you find beauty in these tragic stories. Your purpose is NOT to simply summarize the story.
  • Audience - Your audience is made up of me and your classmates. In other words, we are people who have read the stories and want interpretation/analysis rather than SUMMARY.
  • Tone and Style - This is an academic paper. Use formal language. Avoid: contractions, personal pronouns (such as I, you, me, and we - replace with "the reader" or "the audience"), and slang.
